Am I Excited? No, I’m Letting Go of Expectations

Posted in Live Your Passions

Our expectations of upcoming events set up how our reality unfolds…in a very real way.

“Are you looking forward to it?” This is what everyone says when I tell them our family is about to take off on a holiday to France.

And sure, we’re looking forward to being there. Yes, it’s going to be great….do I seem less than excited?

Hmm, I guess I do.  But try as I might, I just can’t seem to get myself buzzing and leaping around with glee about our wonderful upcoming holiday.

Am I depressed?  No, quite the opposite….I’m really quite happy and at ease in my daily life, so the prospect of flitting off on an amazing journey through France feels great and I’m so grateful we’re able to do it, but it’s not like I’m hanging out for it as an escape from ‘normal’ life.

Because my everyday life is pretty awesome (sorta like a holiday half the time), I’m not putting a stack of expectations on how our trip is going to give me a break from normality or compensate for an unhappy existence.

And that feels like kind of a relief because expectations can be problematic can’t they?

I’ve lived through some serious ups and downs (haven’t we all), and I’m learning more and more, that the less developed – or indeed completely absent – my expectations are, the better I end up enjoying myself.

When in the past I’ve built up a coming event to be the most fabulous, amazing time ever! I’ve often ended up feeling let down by the reality. Anyone else?  It might be just my personality type, but I prefer the gently undulating ride of the walking pony to the thrills and speed of the galloping stallion.

Here’s some more context for you:

My husband and I set a goal back in 2012 to do an overseas holiday with our children every couple of years until our oldest has finished high school.  So in 2014 I took a crash course in Airbnb and Rail Europe and we took a family holiday to Spain. It was wonderful.  We saw lots of amazing places and enjoyed some really memorable moments together as a family.

Mmmm, pastry….with custard

But I’m sure I don’t have to tell you, it’s not all sunshine and roses when travelling abroad as a family. Ordinary life has a habit of creeping in:

  • We all came down with colds
  • We had a few tense moments standing outside restaurants trying to pick a suitable venue for dinner
  • We got lost trying to drive through the city of Malaga because we had no idea how to use the GPS (more tension)
  • Sometimes we got tired of being around one another 24/7
  • One night we had to create a meal from very little because none of the shops were open

Yes I know, it’s a feeble list of slight inconvenience and mild hardship.  It was indeed a wonderful holiday with nothing much to complain about and also, it was just life for me, life in a fascinating, foreign-speaking, unfamiliar place.

We loved it and we were thrilled to arrive home when it was over.

So of course I’m looking forward to our holiday (in only two days!). I’m sure it’s going to be mind-expanding, exciting, wonder-filled and delightful.  But it’s also going to be tiring, stressful and overwhelming at times.

My expectations are simple and vague…there will be a bed to sleep in, food to eat, people to meet, air to breathe and new sights to see. Beyond that, I don’t want to imagine and set forward desires.  I just want to wait and see.

Hey, wish me bon voyage won’t you? And check out my Facebook page here for the photos next week.

Finding it Hard to Meditate? Listen to This…

Posted in Self-Care and Self-Healing

Many of you think you can’t meditate don’t you?  Tried it…too hard…not worth the trouble, right?

That monkey mind just won’t shut up. It’s a constant stream of unpleasant thoughts and feelings, memories and worries amid the shopping lists, reminder to self to phone Mum, and that awful realization you forgot a friend’s birthday last week.

I know, I feel your pain because this happens to me when I meditate too.  Yes, I’ve been a daily (well almost), meditator for oh about nine years now and I too get distracted by my mind.

So do you know what I did to help myself become better at meditating?  I started a women’s meditation circle and began channeling guided meditations for the group within a few months. Fun huh?

That was two years ago and the good news is that running a weekly session with other people has certainly improved the quality of my daily meditations and I love doing it. The not so good new though is some days I still don’t find it easy to settle the body and calm the mind and some (very occasional) days, I don’t make the time to do it at all.

Hey, I’m only human and life has a funny habit of shifting and changing beneath our feet, right?

So, short article today because I want you to take fifteen minutes for yourself right now and listen to this easy and simplified guided meditation I recorded today.

Allow me to gently guide you within your heart space and feel those beautiful glimpses, those soft little moments of stillness and peace.  I guarantee you’ll feel better for doing it.

Much love, Tricia

Thanks so  much for taking the time to listen to this little audio.  Feel free to listen again and share with your friends and if you’d like to meet with me in person or over the telephone for a coaching session, just take a look at this page and contact me for a conversation before you make your appointment.

Oh and if you’d like more free guided meditations like this one and you’re not a subscriber to my website yet then simply sign up in the box below and you’ll receive inspirational articles and more audios from me once a week. Thanks and enjoy your day.

Sorry, I’m a Recovering People Pleaser – The Five Signs

Posted in Live Your Passions

Ever get the feeling you’ve moved into a whole new territory in your life and it doesn’t feel all that comfortable?

It’s possibly been a while, maybe years even, but some time ago I realised just doing something because it would keep everyone else in my life happy, rather than doing it cos I wanted to was really not a great way to live.

Thing is though. It might sound more desirable to not care what others think and just be really focused on being true to ourselves and our own needs, but living it is not that simple, is it?

And you know I’m not talking about becoming a completely selfish and self-centred “b” word. I’m just saying it’s better in life to be clear about what works for us in terms of how we serve others and how we choose to spend our time. There is absolutely no value in running around doing for others and becoming just a teensy bit resentful in the process, if it’s not meeting our own needs in some way.

Okay, I’ll stop being vague and theoretical. Here’s an example:

Just the other day I received one of those sweet but slightly annoying Facebook chain messages (they used to come via email) from someone I genuinely like and admire. I appreciated the sentiments in the message and don’t doubt the sincerity of the person who sent it. But you know what? I can’t bring myself to pass these message on to the requisite number of people as instructed. Call me lazy, stubborn or mean, I just can’t do it.

IMG_1548

Okay, here’s a confession: I have never participated in an email recipe sharing chain. There, I’ve said it.

And even though this isn’t the first time I’ve faced this dilemma, I wrestled with the decision for quite some time before letting it go.

Why? I hear you ask.

Well it’s because I love being liked and I hate receiving disapproval, even if it’s only imagined disapproval and the actual person never even expresses it to me. I regularly make the assumption that people think I’m awful for not complying one hundred percent to their expectations.

Is it just me that does this?

So to everyone I know and love, I’ll say it right here…I’m sorry if I accidentally offend or upset you by not doing what you expect or desire me to do.

I’m sorry but I’m also not sorry because it’s about time people like me stopped storing resentment and guilt like hidden badges of honour because we go out of our way to make sure we are liked in favour of protecting our own happiness and health.

“To thine own self be true.” – William Shakespeare

No sure if you’re a people pleaser?  Here’s five signs you might need a re-think on how you handle requests from others:

  1. You find yourself saying yes to invitations and requests when your inner voice is screaming “NO!”
  2. Your life is too busy to make time for exercise, relaxation and fun.
  3. You find yourself feeling annoyed when people for ask you for help.
  4. You feel as though your efforts to help others aren’t really acknowledged or appreciated.
  5. You often spend time worrying about whether you’ve said or done the right thing after spending time with friends and family.

If you answered, ‘yep’, to four out of five of these signs, then I would say you’re a natural born people pleaser. Do not fear though, help is at hand.

Simply begin pausing before you say yes, tune into your inner self and make sure this is really what, you want to do. And secondly, release the fear of disapproval.  Your true friends and close family will still love you and they may even admire you more if you say no now and again.

Feel like talking it over with me in a coaching session?  Take a look here and contact me for a chat before you make your appointment.

Meditate This March With Tricia

Posted in Self-Care and Self-Healing

Have I ever mentioned how valuable I feel meditation is for us all?

I don’t meditate because I think I should.  I meditate because I’ve seen the results.

An early morning meditation can bring you wonderful gifts
An early morning meditation can bring you wonderful gifts

Meditation has helped me improve every aspect of my life over the eight or nine years I’ve been doing it daily. And I saw the benefits within a few days of committing to it each afternoon while my children were asleep.

I love promoting meditation as a tool for self-care, self-healing and self-awareness.

Here’s a list of some of the benefits I’ve received:

  • Greater calm and peace within myself
  • Improved relationships, especially with my children and husband
  • The ability to sort a problem out by going within instead of seeking outside help always
  • Improved levels of patience, creativity, flexibility, faith and optimism
  • A deeper and richer spiritual life
  • Better mental focus, alertness and even intelligence!

There’s more, many more, but I want you to find out for yourself.

So if you’re willing to make a go of committing to a daily mediation practice, I’d love to help

Every day of March, beginning this Sunday March 1st, I’ll be sharing 31 days of meditation tips and encouraging quotes to help you begin and create your own daily practice.  Ten minutes a day is a really good starting point.

It’s all happening on my Facebook page right here, so all you need to do is click here, like my page and check into Facebook once a day in March to see my tip for the day.  And feel free to leave comments under the posts about how you’re getting on or any questions you may have.

Let’s meditate together each day this March. It’s a choice you’ll be thrilled you made <3

What if Nothing Were Wrong?

Posted in Trust The Universe

Come on, play along with me here, use your imagination…

Ask yourself this:

What would it mean to me if I suddenly felt that there is nothing wrong with my life, with me, with anyone else or with the world?

Breathe it in. Just breathe in that imagined possibility.  How does it make you feel?

Excited, relieved and joyous or, tense, worried and concerned about my sanity?

When I'm out here it's easy to feel good
When I’m out here it’s easy to feel good

If you find it hard to even contemplate this, do not fear, you’ve got plenty of company.  How do you think we all got to believe in this falsehood of duality in the first place? It’s because the majority of people across the developed world all think in much the same way.  We pass judgement on all experiences (and people) as right or wrong, good or bad and for some reason, mainstream culture has placed a big emphasis on what’s wrong, rather than what’s right.

If you watch any news broadcast you’ll know what I mean.

So seriously, what if it’s our perspective that’s flawed, rather than our whole species?

Here’s where I’m heading with this: There’s this universal law of energy some people have described as the Law of Attraction.  What it means for us in three dimensional, human reality is, what you focus on expands.

For the past few hundred years or so, we humans have been ever so slightly focused on making the self wrong, making the ‘other’ wrong and turning our attention to outward pursuits like work to distract ourselves from the pain of this separation from ourselves and one another.

What if, just what if we began right now, seeing and appreciating what’s right within all of us and letting go of our attachment to looking for what’s wrong?

Let’s try something, because like the little boy who shouted, “Look, the emperor has no clothes!”, I want to shout, “Look, everything is good and we are all okay!”

How about this:

Right now in this very moment of your life on this amazing planet of ours, what’s good?

Are you comfortable in your body? Now now, don’t go looking for a problem here, just notice that your body feels more good than bad right?

Yes? So now you can expand this notion out further into your life to see all that is good or at least reasonably acceptable in your life right now.  Just this small action of feeling a little gratitude for what you have, who you are and who you’re with can lift your mood, open your heart and raise your chances of feeling happier in the next moment, then the next and so on…

It’s catching people! Find yourself talking about good stuff instead of bad, happy stories instead of depressing ones and you carry forth a new energy of having more trust in life.  Life is good, mostly, for most of us.

When we feel this and begin living as though it were true, we lift the collective energy of the planet. So to help others, lighten up, see what is good and give up the habit of ‘wrong-making’ that has gotten us all so confused and upset.

When Everything Looks Bad – Celebrate!

Posted in Live Your Passions, and Trust The Universe

Madonna got it right all those years ago when she sang that we are living in a material world. I’m not an especially ‘material girl’ and yet I can look back to my later twenties and early thirties when I had myself convinced that if only I had…

  • That car
  • That house in that neighbourhood
  • That job
  • That dress, etc, etc…

then and only then would I be completely happy and satisfied. And then…

I got some of the things I desired and guess what, I still wasn’t happy.

Everyone knows happiness comes from within and what I’m discovering is that it’s a lifelong process to build the deep sense of self-love and trust in life necessary to truly live it in every moment.

Being in nature makes me deeply happy. My lifestyle honours this.
Being in nature makes me deeply happy. My lifestyle honours this.

We can be distracted from living our true and natural expression in the world when we think we need something outside of ourselves to be complete.  And that includes other people. The trick is to be less attached to all of it and realise that we are always making progress towards a better life.  That’s just how we’re designed. Here’s some wisdom I’ve picked up along the way and I’ve shared with many of my beautiful clients:

“Just when you’re feeling like everything in your life is truly crappy and you feel you’ve really messed it up.  When you feel you’re in the wrong relationship, wrong job, that you’re the worst mother ever or that you’ve not made any progress in your personal growth at all….Celebrate!  Yes, that’s right, celebrate because everything you’ve been asking for (provided you’ve been asking) is about to begin flowing your way.”

Honestly, I’ve experienced this time and time again in my own life and I’ve heard many a client say it’s been their experience too.

The night is darkest before the dawn (old proverb)

It seems that just before we shift, life hands us all we’ve been labeling as wrong, substandard, flawed or broken in our lives in an exaggerated, soap opera-style series of happenings as if to give us one final look before we let it all go.

The key to capitalising from these endings when they show up is to acknowledge them as such and not feel attached to how they make you feel.  To be able to step back and view the upset from an objective stand-point is a sure sign you’re ready for something different.

When it comes to the material things we would like to have in our lives, because yes, it’s okay to want stuff, the same process applies.  The moment we give up on getting something we’ve been dreaming of and let it go, or simply hold the perspective in all matters that all we need and want flows to us effortlessly, it often comes to fruition with very little effort.

The point I’m trying to pull together here is that it’s all one energy and all one outcome.  Whether it’s money, love, a home, a new pair of runners, a career you love or a healthy body.  It’s all in your reach once you release the need to focus on what is wrong or what is missing in your life.

That’s it, it’s that simple.

Clap Along If You Feel…

Posted in Live Your Passions

Few things make me happier on a summer’s day than being at one my local pristine, near-deserted beaches with my family.

IMG_9549

I love the sight of the crystal clear, aquamarine water, the feel of diving under the surface and being refreshed and invigorated by my favourite natural remedy, and hearing the sound of my children chatting happily together as they spot a fish darting away or wait for the next wave to ride in to the shore. I also enjoy seeing my husband emerge from the water smiling and relaxed, ready for a short walk up the beach with me while the kids play in the shallows.

This is summer holidays for us: mornings at the beach, swimming lessons in the ocean, the skate park, water slides, bakery morning teas, locally made ice-creams, fish and chips under peppermint trees by the bay and watching the local kangaroos make their daily pilgrimage to sip water from our bush-placed bird bath.

Now I don’t mean to boast, really I don’t, and of course you know there’s also the normal arguments, flat days, illnesses and mundanity that we all experience.  I’m simply describing what I’ve chosen for my life at this time and while many of you might be thinking; “yes, that sounds like a life I would like“, just as many will be saying; “how boring and unpleasant, I wouldn’t like to do any of that”.

My point is that at least five years ago I began refining my concept of what makes me happy and when we moved to this beautiful, nature-filled part of the world, my dream came true.  I live in a place I love – it feels like my spiritual home – and truly, all I did to get here was first, believe it was possible and second, allow life to guide me little by little to make it a reality.

We’ve now lived in our beach-side locale for three years and it’s become home for all four of us.

When I talk about wants and desires with my coaching clients there seems to be two main barriers that prevent them from talking openly and confidently about what makes them happy:

One – Not feeling they deserve to even ponder (let alone have) more joy, freedom, love, pleasure or prosperity in their lives.

Two – Not knowing in a clear sense what a happier life might look and feel like for them, perhaps as a result of subscribing for too long to what other people thought was good for them or allowing others to have what they liked in exchange for those people’s approval and support.

I need only cast my mind back seven years to recall how this feels.

When my children were aged five and three, I too had great trouble sorting through the complex network of thoughts and feelings that made up what I thought I needed in my life to make me happy.  I knew I wanted change and a new direction but it was a slow process to unpick the various personas I’d tried on for size since reaching adulthood to get down to the truth of who I really was and what brought me fulfillment and joy.

To be honest, it’s a process still unfolding, as it should be. After all, this life we have is not a journey with an ultimate destination, it’s an ever-evolving adventure where the more open we are to change and new opportunities, the more we get to truly be alive.

So how to start?

Ask yourself this question and write the answer down in as much detail as you can…

When I last found myself feeling free, relaxed, inspired and fulfilled, what was I doing?

Examine the elements that brought these feelings to you and seek them out again as soon as you can.  Keep doing this and you’ll attract more and more opportunities to be in that happy zone, like attracts like and happy breeds happy.

If you’d like some help and intuitive guidance from me with all this, take a look here and contact me for a free thirty minute phone coaching session before you book in.

The Five Big Benefits of Living from Inner Guidance

Posted in Live From Intuition

We all follow our gut feelings from time to time in life. And yet how many of us are tied inexplicably to the mind when it comes to making the majority of our bigger life decisions? It’s what we’ve been taught, it’s how others around us live right?

So just imagine how differently you might feel if I told you your mind was never designed to run the show and that your inner wisdom knows far more about who you are and what you need than your mind could ever comprehend?

When I cast my mind back to my life just eight short years ago, I can see I had intuitive abilities and I can acknowledge that my inner wisdom guided me to some pretty huge life decisions to my ultimate benefit. Walking away from my first marriage was one, choosing my current husband another, and it certainly played a strong role in the first couple of homes he and I bought as 20-something year-olds all those years ago.

Not my home but I can walk here in ten minutes from mine. Follow your bliss people...
Not my home but I can walk here in ten minutes from mine. Follow your bliss people…

And yet for all those everyday decisions; what to wear, what to eat, how to exercise, what job to take, how to handle money and just generally how to live, I followed information from my mind, the media, books, my parents… you know, from outside my inner self.

What I know now is that I can live far more successfully, calmly, joyfully and healthily by accessing my inner guidance for each and every daily choice I make. Now this is still a conscious process for me the majority of the time. I need to pause and ask inwards for guidance.  It takes a couple of seconds and I’m fully aware of doing it.

What I’m now seeing occasionally though is this instant knowing about what will serve me best when faced with some options and there’s no need to pause and check in with myself. Sounds cool huh? So what I’d love you to gain from this article is the understanding that I’m a self-taught intuitive, I’m no more intuitive than the average person and possibly less naturally intuitive than you.  Yes, it could easily be true.

I want to share with you how much easier and fun it’s made my life and how little I miss the old mentally overwhelmed, frustrated and confused me. So, here are the Five Big Benefits that come with living from inner guidance:

  1. Your physical health improves, as what to eat and how to move each day becomes crystal clear
  2. Your relationships become easier and more aligned with your pure nature as you attract the people into your life who match your truthful self-expression
  3. It’s easier to express your individual creativity because you have greater connection to and faith in your divine light
  4. You feel naturally drawn to work that is fun, meaningful and easy for you because it becomes unsustainable to work in roles that do not feed your soul
  5. The deep understanding that you are a spiritual being spending some time in this physical existence becomes clearer and you feel more motivated to follow your dreams and make the most of this life

That all sounds pretty exciting to me, and believe me, since learning to live this way, this is how my life feels now.  If you’re interested in getting some help from me with learning how to follow your inner guidance just click here to learn more.

When You Look at What’s Real, You Succeed

Posted in Live From Intuition, Live Your Passions, and Trust The Universe

Why oh why do we over-complicate life?

It’s the end of 2014 and I’m feeling aligned with this strong surge of energy to get organised, get moving and set plans in place to make the most of early 2015.

20141201_144544

In November I ran two sneak preview women’s healing dance classes at a great venue a short bike ride from my home.  I had a lovely response, people came along and they all seemed to connect with what I was offering.

So why is it that I’m wasting so much energy in pondering what time and day and even what venue to offer this class at on a weekly basis in the new year?  The obvious answer would be, the same time and the same place as the preview classes because they worked really well.  Yes Tricia, people came along and enjoyed it so why change?

It’s not our first instinct to keep it simple though is it?

My perfecting nature combined with my fear of success/self-sabotaging nature brings up all sorts of barriers and questions to prevent me from settling with the reality that the first and most obvious option is actually the best option for right now.

I go off into grandiose fantasies about what this dance class could be in the future if only I had the perfect schedule, venue or class program.  What’s real though is that I’m still at the beginning of this new venture and I need to allow myself a settling in time before it gets bigger and (possibly) better.

So thankfully, I’ve taken time to gather my thoughts before I launch into creating timetables and big plans for 2015.

Just slowing it all down and listening within can be of great help to us all when we are feeling confused or conflicted over a set of decisions.

Life/God/Universe/Spirit is always there with unfailing patience and love showing us the way via the unfolding of events, relationships, tiny little moments and our own physical senses, how we may move forward into greater fulfillment, joy and peace.

It’s really not as complicated as our all-too clever minds try to make it.

If you’ve worked yourself into a lather over the next step forward in your life and have no idea what choice would be best, go into a meditative state and ask yourself these four simple questions:

  • What am I really worried about?
  • What’s the outcome that I’m seeking and is it realistic?
  • Where is the evidence that what’s worked before will not work again?
  • If I knew the best option right now, what would it be?

This little technique will serve to return your emotions to a balanced state, allow for the intuitive self and the mind to work in cooperation, not competition and give you greater confidence in your own personal power to direct your path.

It’s not about avoiding trial and error or mistakes, it’s just about moving through it ALL more efficiently and gracefully because although there’s no finish line or summit to conquer, it’s more fun if we’re aligned with what’s real and true.

I’m now offering Inner Guidance Coaching in three, six and eight session packages here and you can pay with Paypal or your credit card. Take a closer look if you feel a resonance with my words.

Also, for those of you who read right to the end of the article, a FREE GIFT –  click here to listen to a free guided meditation by me to cleanse and activate your throat chakra energy.  Enjoy! <3

How To Create Your Own Daily Spiritual Practice

Posted in Live From Intuition, Self-Care and Self-Healing, and Trust The Universe

I want you to know something you may not have heard before…This comes from my heart and my deepest knowing.

You are spiritual to your core.  There is no such thing as spiritual development, only your awareness need be developed.  Once you perceive your divinity and goodness (Godness), as an infinite being of light, much of your ‘work’ is done and any other falsehoods about your nature and human flaws simply fall away.

What I’ve come to realise only quite recently is that you get this awareness by adopting a daily spiritual practice of your own design. It might be meditation, yoga, walking, running, swimming, dancing, prayer, listening to music, singing, drawing, painting, writing, tai chi, sitting in your garden and listening to nature….  It doesn’t matter what it looks like, it matters how it makes you feel.

You can come up with a suite of practices that you intuitively move into when the urge comes. One morning you might get up early and walk in nature, the next you might journal and meditate or do some yoga and so on. Feeling the freedom to choose what you do is a wonderful motivation to make it happen.

Here are my Top Five Tips for getting the most out of any daily practice you wish to commit to with the intention of connecting with the deeper ‘you’:

  1. Begin and end your day with one or two practices from your suite of options
  2. Do your practice alone
  3. Treat your practice as a joyful time of being-ness rather than a task to be completed
  4. Set the intention each morning before rising to embrace the present moment in your daily practice
  5. Use your daily practice to be in and fully experience your real emotions, not to escape them

When you commit to spending even ten minutes, twice each day in a spiritual or shall we say inner-connection practice, the benefits are many.  How does more productive, more creative, less worrisome, more physically healthy, more joyful, more clear-thinking and more loving sound? These are just a handful of the gifts I’ve received since getting clear about prioritising having a daily spiritual practice in my life.

So how to begin?  Well, set an intention right now in this very moment of loving yourself a little more and just see where that leads you.  We’re here to enjoy life and be aware of our own innate divinity, so devote a little time every day to cultivating and nurturing that aspect of you.

Helping people create and commit to their own daily spiritual practice is something I love doing in my Inner Guidance Coaching Programs, click to read more…

You are you and that’s enough, all that’s needed is for you to fully know this truth. <3
